IFSC PROJECTS
The IFSC not only wants to be a discussion forum on the Internet but also wants to actively help in the development of Indian football.
ACADEMY PROJECT:
One of the ways the IFSC-International wants to help and support the development of talented footballers in India is the helping of setting-up and getting funds for Academy projects, which the IFSC would help to run.
We would like to start with two specific projects:
I. Calicut
II. Calcutta
Calicut (Kozhikode):
Calicut is one of the most football-minded and interested cities in Kerala. For a few years some football enthusiastic people have been working on the plans to start a football academy in Calicut.
After months of brainstorming, discussions and consultations, the plans for the future are now ready. In March/April 2004 some important decisions were taken. An action plan has been worked out. The real work can start now.
Criteria of selection:
quality first
maximum number of players inducted: 16
age category: boys born in 1995/96
selection of boys through schools in Calicut
besides Calicut three further football centres would be attached to the project. They would be in Koodaranhi, Chalyam and Wayanad (near Kalpetta)
co-operation with the Athletics School (Academy) of P.T. Usha
According to the latest FIFA World Rankings Indian football isn’t doing too well. The key reason behind this is that young footballers start too late with their football education. The initiative in Calicut wants to change this, by bringing together a small group of talented, young boys and give them the needed guidance in their football development.
Action Plan:
a group of co-operators is formed around Arun Kumar Nanu, the man who took the initiative to start the academy
schools in and around Calicut and the three centres will be visited by the co-operators
a short selection trial will be organised in the schools
a list of talented boys born in 1995/96 will be put together
talented boys will be brought together in Calicut and/or in one of the centres during holidays and/or vacations
besides primary intensive training, the selection of boys will continue
a youth team would be formed to play matches and take part in tournaments in India and abroad
in 2007: residential academy would be started at the grounds of the P.T. Usha Athletics School (16 beds for the chosen boys are reserved in the sports hostel)
Arun Kumar Nanu has founded a Trust, “Sports & Education Promotion Trust”, to support the initiative. Besides from the IFSC-International, the project will get support from the Calicut district referee’s association and by local football coaches.
Already the project has received extensive coverage in the Kerala press.
